The History of Surfing
through Tres60

by Javier Amezaga Gondra

The magazine 3sesenta (Santurtzi, 1987), the first surfing magazine in the world in Spanish language, has been an exceptional witness of the evolution of surfing on our beaches for almost four decades and has been the driving force behind the industry and the development of what was an incipient sport in the second half of the 80’s to what it has become today.

The presentation of this book is basically visual, giving priority to the quality of the paper and printing, combining the texts with attractive images.

Footage of a jetski riding on the lip above the surfer’s head while tubing in Teahupoo. The best longboarder in A Coruña is a porn star. Laird Hamilton surfs with a hydrofoil keel without the board coming in contact with the water. A Frenchman descends Everest with a snowboard. Danny Way jumps over the Great Wall of China with his skateboard. A girl with her ass in the air is used to advertise wetsuits. The advertisement of a bomb in a hydroelectric dam to create a giant wave is published just days after the 11M attacks. Gonzalo Taboada tells us about the tribulations of high society surfing in the 70s.

Kelly Slater gives a surprising view on the twin towers attacks. A report on the north of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, still without the presence of local surfers, discovers the excellent quality, until then almost unknown, of its waves. The stories of Willy Uribe and Eduardo Saenz make our imagination fly. The practically empty waves of Morocco and Portugal are the preferred destinations for surf trips. El Maromo harshly accuses politicians and locals for the Prestige disaster. The guiris show us the value of Mundaka. Barack Obama receives a surfer at the White House. Tom Curren proposes an invitational championship in Meñakoz together with Surfrider Foundation. A surfer is elected Mayor of Ferrol.
